Resistance to frost of PRIMAcryl® Professional Heavy Body and Fluid from 2025

product information

Acrylic colours and other water-based colours have always been known to be sensitive to frost. In addition, high temperatures can also affect colour quality in poorly insulated studios. Thus, extreme temperature differences posed a particular challenge for worldwide deliveries to different climate zones.

Thanks to an innovative formulation, Schmincke has now successfully overcome this obstacle. From 2025, PRIMAcryl Professional Heavy Body and Fluid colours are frost-resistant and can also withstand high temperatures. Consequently, this makes transport and storage considerably easier, without having to take temperature-related restrictions into account.

Optimised formulation for maximum resistance

Following extensive revision, PRIMAcryl Professional Heavy Body and Fluid colours are formulated to withstand multiple frost and heat effects.

Schmincke test method for temperature resistance

Our PRIMAcryl Professional Heavy Body and Fluid colours have been subjected to an intensive temperature change test under laboratory conditions:

  • Number of cycles: 7
  • Frost test: approx. -18°C (0°F) | Duration per cycle: approx. 48 hours
  • Heat test: approx. 40°C (105°F) | Duration per cycle: approx. 48 hours

Each colour was subjected to a detailed application check and physical measurements before and after the tests. The result: all colours remained immaculate and easy to apply!

Storage recommendation

Despite the optimised resistance, we still recommend storing the colours permanently frost and heat-free (not above 40° C / 105° F) to ensure maximum quality.

Important note

This frost resistance applies exclusively to PRIMAcryl Professional Heavy Body and Fluid (new formulation from 2025). All other Schmincke colours should continue to be treated as if they are frost sensitive.
